Smokey is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Woodlawn High school where he was a two-sport athlete - football and basketball. He was the number one lineman in the State of Alabama in 1984.
Smokey attended Auburn University from 1984 to 1989. He played football under the legendary Pat Dye. He participated in two Sugar Bowls, the Citrus Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. After college, he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks. He also played with the Pittsburg Gladiators.
After his professional career, he served as a linebacker coach for four years for UAB's inaugural football team. He entered the Birmingham school system in 1994 where he served until 2001. He served as a linebacker coach for Ensley High School and an administrator at Greengate Middle School. Afterwards, he served as a linebacker coach for Selma High School for four years. He then served as the linebacker and strengths coach for Faulkner University.
Smokey has participated in numerous charitable organizations.
Some of those include: West Georgia All Star Youth Camp (Youth Coordinator and Coach), CAMP Smile-aMile, Gene Jelks Youth Camp, Children's Village, Chris Hammond Youth Foundation, Palmer Williams Group, Sunny King Ford Golf Tournament, Autographs 4 Amber, Kent Crenshaw Foundation, John Knight Celebrity Golf Tournament, Joe Cribbs Celebrity Golf Tournament, First Tee Celebrity Golf Tournament, Randy Campbell's Iron Bowl Legends, Auburn University's A-Day Golf Tournament, Kia Manufacturing's Auburn/Georgia Autograph Event, Greg Calhoun's Celebrity Golf Tournament, Josh Evans Golf Tournament, Birmingham Fire Department golf tournament, James Owens Foundation, American Red Cross' Alabama/Auburn Blood Drive, and PEERS Caring Homes for Homeless Veterans' inaugural golf tournament. He is an active member of the Auburn Football Lettermen Club. He was the 2008 Magic City Classic keynote speaker; served on the Board of Directors of the Josh Evans Foundation and raised funds for the Goode Foundation.
Smokey has been the owner and operator of SHP Contracting Company, LLC for over twenty-five years. He is a champion for the betterment of young people. He uses his experience in sports to encourage and guide youth to become confident and valuable contributors to society.
